James Earle Fraser turned to Theodore Roosevelt as a subject throughout his career. Here, he depicts the profile of the 26th US president in low-relief bronze above the quote, “Aggressive fighting for the right is the noblest sport the world affords.” Attributed to the former president, the suggestion of what is right is left up to interpretation. Fraser made several bronzes in tribute to the former president; however, his artistic choices often diminished Roosevelt’s problematic opinions on race and citizenship, which informed the president’s foreign and domestic policies.
