In this painting, John Singer Sargent depicted an upper-middle-class woman at leisure, floating along the Thames River. Sargent’s painting technique of short, quick brushstrokes applied in all directions, his emphasis on complimentary colors (primarily red and green), and his focus on the effects of filtered sunlight bouncing off the water relate to French Impressionism, a new style of painting popular in Europe and the United States in the late nineteenth century. In fact, Sargent created Under the Willows after visiting the painter Claude Monet during the summer of 1887.
