My maternal grandfather (1917-2015) taught me the art of chair caning and it has been a passion of mine ever since. I was an art major in college, an art teacher, and now a history teacher, and so glad to have learned from him how to carry on his craft. It might seen a bit simple, but the chair tells a story of those who made it, and continuing that story that someday, someone else will repair is an awesome thought. The caned seats and weaving is almost like therapy/ meditation for me. Having worked with textiles and basketry through college, this has been both a source of enjoyment and income. every chair is different, and despite not knowing the maker of the chair, I can have the satisfaction of now being a part of the piece.
