Over the course of 10 days in April 2019, a white supremacist set fire to three rural Louisiana churches. The first fire tore through St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre on March 26, the second at the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2, and the third broke out at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, also in Opelousas, on April 4. Each of the churches were empty when the fires were set and no one was hurt.

Despite losing a great deal of history—a Bible used by pastors, handwritten sermons, financial records, and documents dating back to 1889—members of Greater Union Baptist Church, which was established more than 130 years ago, did not lose hope.
